Keylong/Shimla: The fresh layer of snowfall piling up on frozen ice from previous snowfalls
has heightened the risk of avalanches in the snowbound regions of Lahaul-Spiti and Bharmaur, experts have warned.
With the accumulation of unstable snow in high-altitude zones, the threat looms large over several areas, making travel and outdoor activities highly dangerous.
What is an Avalanche?
An avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down a slope, triggered when a weak snow layer beneath a heavier one gives way due to external forces like wind, rising temperatures, or additional snowfall.
The recent weather pattern, where fresh snow has settled over old, compacted ice layers, has created a precarious situation in many parts of the region.
Experts from the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) and local authorities have flagged concerns, emphasizing that loose, unstable snow over a hardened layer increases the chances of spontaneous snow slides.
Advisory for Public:
1. Avoid Unnecessary Travel: Stay away from high-risk avalanche-prone areas.
2. Follow Official Alerts: Keep track of weather and avalanche warnings issued by authorities.
3. Avoid Steep Slopes: Avalanches typically start on slopes between 30-45 degrees, so avoid such terrains.
4. Emergency Preparedness: If living or traveling in high-risk areas, ensure access to safety gear like avalanche beacons and shovels.
Local administration has urged residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution, especially in regions known for frequent avalanches.
Given the unpredictable nature of snow slides, any movement in these areas could prove fatal.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation, and rescue teams are on high alert in case of any emergencies.
Travelers and locals are advised to stay informed and adhere to safety protocols to prevent any untoward incidents.
