BELDEYAN(SHIMLA): In the nondescript village of Baldeyan, near Nal Dehra Golf Course of the British India fame, about 22 KM from the bustling state capital of Shimla, there exists a government school that has emerged as an inspiration for government-run schools across Himachal Pradesh.
It is the Government Utkrisht Senior Secondary School Baldeyan, which has also got the tag of PMShree Scheme school.
The school has etched its name in the annals of educational excellence, proving that with a new vision and an urge to work, even the government schools, which are in doldrum across the state, can also shine shoulder-to-shoulder with the best public and Convent schools.
This landmark transformation was spearheaded by none other than the proactive Principal, DP Jishtu, who assumed leadership in April 2019.ī
With a clear mission in mind, he embarked on a journey to reshape the school's campus, which once gave a free-run for stray cattle and dogs, into a haven for learning and growth for its students.
Joining hands with the school's alumni association and its staff, they pooled their resources, both in terms of funds and effort, to breathe new life into the institution.
Together, they transformed the school's surroundings, raising retaining walls, creating inviting pathways, and expanding the playground into fields for various sports- the village students now do workout in gyms, play football, basketball, volleyball and badminton and other sports.
But their vision didn’t end here. They worked tirelessly to make the campus carbon-neutral, installing purifiers and chillers funded by generous donations.
Over two years of dedicated work, they turned the once-neglected campus into one of Himachal's most beautiful educational environments.
Their dedication did not go unnoticed. On June 3, 2022, the then Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, paid a visit and interacted with the students.
He commended the clean and beautiful environment and praised the principal and staff for their dedication, planting a chinar tree to further enhance the campus's beauty.
Governor Arlekar returned on August 8, 2022, to launch the Ayush Padshala Vatika campaign, contributing to the school's reputation as a hub for botanical and herbal enthusiasts. This initiative not only captured the students' hearts but also drew visitors from other schools.ī
In recognition of their remarkable achievements, the school received the coveted title of Utkrisht Vidyalaya in 2022 under the Swaran Jayanti Utkrisht Vidyalaya Yojana by the Government of India. This milestone brought increased funding, enabling the school's all-round development.
Today, the school boasts a botanical garden, herbal garden, Ayush Vartika, sports facilities, modern classrooms, labs, and a virtual classroom for hands-on computer experience.
With an outdoor and indoor gymnasium, the institution actively promotes a culture of fitness among students and staff.
The school also has added another feather to its cap-sustainability. The school has installed solar panels, reducing electricity bill.
Principal DP Jishtu has also initiated a documentary project on gender sensitivity, mentoring aspiring filmmakers and addressing important societal issues. “Sidarth Chauhan, a film maker has come to the school and made documentary and thematic, “Make Your Own Film” that motivated the students”.
Furthermore, the school actively manages solid waste. It has separate bins for paper, plastic, and organic waste, using compost and organic manure to nurture the campus's flora.
The school now buzzes with activities, hosting tournaments, contests, and scientific events, nurturing students' talents and fostering a scientific temperament. The Monal Eco-Club, named after Himachal's state bird, touted as most beautiful Pheasants on this Planet, has added to the school's charm by planting diverse flora.
Their latest endeavor involves collaboration with agriculture vocational courses, aiming to cultivate flowering plants for funds to support school activities.
Baldeyan School has transformed from a modest institution into a place where students are eager to learn, play, and teachers find joy in teaching. The PM Shree scheme promises an annual grant to enhance infrastructure and pedagogical innovation, offering a bright future for both students and educators.
