Tragedy Near Pandoh: Five of Marriage Party, Including Infant, Killed as Car Plunges Into Gorge
Mandi, April 25:
In a heart-wrenching accident near Pandoh dam, five members of a marriage party — including an eight-month-old infant — lost their lives after their private car skidded off the Pandoh–Bhakidhar road and plunged into a deep gorge on Thursday.
The victims were returning home from a relative’s wedding in Seraj area of Mandi district when the tragic mishap occurred.
The car veered off the narrow hilly road and fell into a gorge near the dam, leaving the vehicle completely mangled.
Among the deceased were 35-year-old Duni Chand, his wife Kanta, their infant daughter Kajal of Traur, Dhaulu Ram of Naun and Meena, a Nepali national who was travelling with them.
The accident has devastated the family and shocked the local residents.
A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), assisted by local police and residents, faced a tough challenge extracting the bodies from the wreckage due to the steep terrain and the condition of the vehicle.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the narrow stretch and possible overspeeding could have contributed to the crash.
Shimla, April 25: Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday led a solemn candlelight march in Shimla to protest against the brutal terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed 28 lives on April 22.
The march, organised by the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee, began from Sher-e-Punjab and culminated at the historic Ridge Maidan.
A large number of Congress leaders, party workers, and citizens joined the march to pay tributes to the victims and express solidarity with the grieving families.
Prominent among those who participated were Congress in-charge for Himachal and Rajya Sabha MP Rajni Patil, HPCC President Pratibha Singh, Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri, Health Minister Col (Dr) Dhani Ram Shandil, Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, Education Minister Rohit Thakur, and Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh. Mayor Surinder Chauhan, HPTDC Chairman R.S. Bali, State Planning Board Vice Chairman Bhawani Singh Pathania, Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania, several MLAs, and senior party leaders were also present.
Addressing the gathering, CM Sukhu condemned the cowardly attack in Pahalgam and said such acts will not be tolerated.
“The Congress Party stands united with the Union Government in the fight against terrorism.
We vow to eliminate the external forces that threaten the nation’s peace and security,” he declared.
He recalled the sacrifices of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, who laid down their lives for the unity and integrity of India.
“This heinous attack on innocent tourists is an assault on India’s sovereignty. The Congress Party is standing shoulder to shoulder with the bereaved families and the nation,” he added.
CM Sukhu also stated that both the All India Congress Committee and the Himachal Government are committed to supporting the Centre in giving a strong response to any forces trying to destabilise the country.
Negi Death Turns Flashpoint: HPSEBL Observes Anti-Corruption Day, But Will Sukhu Sarkar Act?
SHIMLA: At the HPSEBL headquarters in here today, engineers, employees, and pensioners gathered to mark Anti-Corruption Day on the birth anniversary of late Er. Vimal Negi — the Chief Engineer, HPPCL whose body was found in Bhakra Dam under mysterious circumstances on March 18 after he went missing from his office on March 10, 2025.
But while slogans were raised and pledges taken, the rot in the system remained untouched.
The late Er. Negi didn’t end his life — he was pushed to the edge by a system knee-deep in organized corruption, toxic work culture, and official apathy.
His death has become a symbol of everything that’s wrong within the power corridors of Himachal.
The Joint Action Committee — led by Er. Lokesh Thakur (Convener), Heera Lal Verma (Co-Convener), and Er. Suneel Grover (Patron, All India Power Engineers Federation) — slammed the state government’s continued silence.
“The FIR names are out, the harassment is documented, yet those responsible are untouched, enjoying impunity under government protection,” thundered Er. Grover.
They demanded immediate dismissal of the accused under Article 311 of the Constitution and criminal prosecution.
The protestors pledged to fight corruption with honesty, transparency, and courage — the very ideals that cost Negi his life.
But the big question hangs heavy: Why is the government shielding the accused?
The SIT is in cold storage, the Onkar Chand Sharma committee report is collecting dust, and the Negi family has been forced to seek justice from the High Court, demanding a CBI probe.
The silence of CM Sukhu is no longer just questionable — it’s damning. Will he suspend Meena and move to contest Deshraj’s bail in the Supreme Court?
Or will he continue playing safe while the public rage spills onto the streets?
Even the opposition BJP hax backed the Negi family’s call for a CBI investigation.
Meanwhile, the people — from engineers to ordinary citizens — are watching, and they are angry.
The engineering fraternity have taken a pledge today, that should prompt the government to act fast, before things go out of hand.

Rs 2000 Crore Announced for Agri-Horti Boost, But Farmers Ask – "Where's Our Compensation for Crop Loss?"
Apple, vegetable crops ruined by storms and drought; no relief, no KCC waiver – only insurance companies prospering
Shimla, 24 April 2025 —
While Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today proudly announced that the state government will spend Rs 2,000 crore this financial year to strengthen agriculture and horticulture, farmers reeling under crop failures due to extreme weather are asking: “What use are big budgets when not a penny reaches the ground?”
At a high-level meeting with agriculture, horticulture and allied departments, CM Sukhu spoke of “innovative measures” and schemes like ‘Him Ganga Yojana’, new milk collection units, and support for natural farming with fixed MSPs.
But in the apple belts of Himachal, especially higher altitudes, this year’s bloom was shattered by sudden squalls and hailstorms.
“Our entire apple crop got wiped out before it could even set,” says Mohan Lal, an orchardist from Kotkhai. “The flowers were knocked off by hail and winds. We don’t even have enough fruit for household use, forget selling.”
Vegetable growers in lower belts are battling another enemy — drought. “No rain, no irrigation support, and the market is flooded with imports. We can’t survive like this,” says Kamla Devi, a farmer from Solan. “They talk of Rs 2000 crore. We haven’t seen even Rs 200.”
To make matters worse, not a single compensation has been paid for crop losses, no Kisan Credit Card (KCC) limits have been waived off, and most farmers say the crop insurance schemes are a scam.
“We pay the premium, the companies collect their share, and when disaster strikes, they vanish,” adds Ramesh Negi from Jubbal.
Government schemes like the ‘Him Parivar Register’ or fixed MSPs for turmeric and maize under natural farming sound good on paper, but farmers say there's zero implementation where it matters.
“Natural farming won’t help when nature itself is turning hostile. What we need is timely help, not just slogans,” says Tulsi Ram, a senior grower from Rohru.
As ministers and bureaucrats gather for meetings, the fields remain empty and farmers hopeless.
The contrast between grand announcements and ground reality has perhaps never been this stark.
“Try farming one season without support, then talk big in meetings,” says Nirmal Singh, a dairy farmer in Mandi. “We’re not asking for favours — just fairness.”
Pahalgam/New Delhi/Shimla:
India has launched a blistering counter-offensive—diplomatically, economically, and strategically—after a brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam claimed 26 innocent lives, including tourists from Haryana,Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal, Maharashtra and a local horseman, Sayed Hussain, who died trying to protect them.
In Bihar PM Modi declared that the terrorists and their backers will face consequences beyond their imagination.
Sources confirmed that the Prime Minister today would convene an all-party meeting, where it is expected that they would unanimously resolve to give a “fitting and lasting” reply to Pakistan.
Intelligence reports squarely blamed Pakistan-backed terror modules for plotting the carnage to shatter peace in Kashmir and derail tourism.

Local Hero, National Grief
Horseman Sayed Hussain, a 34-year-old from Anantnag, died shielding tourists from gunfire.
“He shouted, ‘Don’t run toward the riverbank!’—he saved lives,” said Rina Mukherjee, a survivor from Kolkata.
Mass protests and candlelight marches erupted across Srinagar, Jammu, and Leh, with one resounding slogan:
“No more terror in Kashmir. Not in our name.”
