Workshop Highlights Ecosystem-Based Forest Management and Tech Innovations
Shimla – The Forest-PLUS 3.0 program, a partnership between the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and USAID, held a one-day workshop at the ICFRE-Himalayan Forest Research Institute in Panthaghati.
The workshop focused on promoting Ecosystem-Based Forest Management (EBFM) and technological innovations among research scholars and students.
Dr. Sanjeeva Pandey, Senior Forest Consultant, explained that well-managed ecosystems naturally conserve biodiversity: "If the ecosystem is well managed, biodiversity will be conserved and vice-versa."
Ms. Hannah James, Capacity Building and Training Specialist, highlighted the importance of including diverse perspectives in forest management.
"Social and gender inclusion is crucial in ensuring that all voices are heard and considered in our forest management strategies."
Dr. Vaneet Jishtu, Senior Scientist at HFRI, who coordinated the workshop, expressed that this initiative aims to equip the next generation of environmentalists with the knowledge and tools needed to protect our forests effectively.
"We want to encourage research scholars and students to apply ecosystem-based approaches in their work, integrating technology and inclusivity for better forest management.", Dr Jishtu said.
GIS expert Dibyendu Biswas led the practical session on map creation using GIS technology, demonstrating how technological tools can enhance forest management.
"GIS technology allows for precise planning and monitoring, which is essential for effective forest conservation."
Practical Learning:
Participants engaged in group activities to devise solutions to real-world environmental challenges. These hands-on sessions ensured that the theoretical knowledge gained could be applied practically.
By the end of the workshop, students had a better understanding of how managing forests through an ecosystem-based approach helps conserve biodiversity.
They also learn how critical role technology plays in modern forest conservation, and the importance of incorporating social and gender inclusivity in forest management practices.
