IIT Mandi researchers who do the study on risk factors of Heart diseases

MANDI:  If you are exposed to pollutants or don't exercise/ don't do any physical activity or you are a smoker /a passive smoker or a fast foodie, you run a greater risk of getting the cardiovascular diseases(CVDs), reveal a  new study carried out by IIT Mandi.

It is not only traditional and physiological factors that lead to CVDs, even environmental exposure is a significant risk factor for the occurrence and progression of CVDs in older adults in India, the study reveals.

Indian Institute of Technology Mandi researchers have conducted this study to identify the most significant risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) among adults aged 45 and above in India.

A majority of the population of India resides in rural areas and uses unclean fuels for cooking and other purposes, exposing them to harmful smoke emitted from burning them.

Second, even the non-smokers exposed the passive smoking, is believed to have similar cardiovascular effects and run risk comparable to active smoking.

The individuals who down exercise or do physical activity, says  study, develop behavioural risk factors, leading to CVDs.

The study showed that the effect of physiological factors, which include diabetes, high cholesterol, depression, and obesity on cardio vascular health is particularly serious.

The sedentary lifestyle of people, the adoption of fast-food culture, and urbanization are some of the reasons for the prevalence of these physiological factors.

CVDs are a leading cause of mortality worldwide, claiming the lives of around 17.9 million people annually.

The researchers analysed data from more than 59000 individuals aged 45 and above in both rural and urban India and arrived at the predominant risk factors of the disease.

The details of the research have been published in the journal, Current Problems in Cardiology (Elsevier) - Impact Factor: 16.464, in a paper co-authored by Dr. Ramna Thakur Associate Professor, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Mandi and her research scholars Ms. Gayathri and Ms. Sujata.

Dr Ramna Thakur said, “There are several traditional risk factors for CVDs, including high systolic blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol, obesity, unhealthy food, poor nutritional status, age, family history, physical inactivity, smoking, and alcohol consumption”.

But among the lesser known and significant factor is exposure to air pollutants.

“We aimed to cluster these risk factors into different groups and identify the exclusive individual effect of each group on CVDs prevalence among adults aged 45 and above in India”, Dr Ramna said.

The research team utilized data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), a nationally representative longitudinal survey of 73,396 individuals aged 18 and above. They cover all Indian states and Union Territories.

The data were collected from wave 1 of the study launched under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, being the nodal agency.

The researchers included 59,073 older adults aged 45 and above after cleaning the data.

To reduce indoor air pollution and safeguard public health, the study recommends promoting the use of cleaner technology such as liquified petroleum gas, solar, electricity and biogas mainly in rural India.

When individuals do light to moderate physical activity in middle or older age.

It has a considerable positive impact on the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular disease and overall mortality.

Risk awareness programmes associated with alcohol and tobacco use could also be an effective method to curb their use and reduce the probability of getting diagnosed with CVDs.
