SHIMLA, July 31,2024: Himachal Pradesh is set to construct the world’s longest ropeway in Shimla, spanning 13.79 kilometers and connecting 15 stations, according to Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri
As of now, the 4 km-long Auli Ropeway in Uttarakhand is India's longest. It is world's the second-longest ropeway behind Vietnam's 7,899.9 m long Hòn Thơm cable car.
When completed the under-construction 5.5 km-long Mussoorie-Dehradun Ropeway will be the second longest in India after Shimla's Ropeway now.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri announced this major development at a symposium on urban transport innovation at Hotel Holiday Home.
This ₹1734.40 crore project marks a big milestone for the state.
Agnihotri said, "Himachal Pradesh is swiftly becoming a leader in ropeway infrastructure. This project will position us as a model for other states."
He noted that local investors are spearheading ropeway projects in Chintpurni and Rohtang. "It's a matter of pride that Himachalis are playing a crucial role in developing international-standard ropeways."
The ropeway will begin construction on March 1, 2025.
Documentation for FCA approval was uploaded on April 1, 2024, and the route will feature Monal, Deodar, and Apple lines.
The New Development Bank (NDB) has already conducted an inspection and approved the concept note on July 12, 2024.
The project is set to receive the final nod in NDB's December board meeting, after which tenders will be awarded.
Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sunder Singh Thakur highlighted the environmental benefits, saying, "Ropeways are eco-friendly. They will ease traffic congestion and boost tourism."
He mentioned the upcoming Bijli Mahadev ropeway in Kullu as a significant tourist attraction.
Transportation Principal Secretary RD Nazim added, "Our goal is to make Himachal a clean and green state by March 31, 2026.
Ropeways will play a key role in this transformation.
The Shimla ropeway will reduce traffic jams, with 80% funding from NDB and 20% from the state government."
Sanjay Gupta, CMD of Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation, stated, "This project will redefine Himachal’s identity".
It’s not just about tourism; it's a vital transportation solution." The ropeway will accommodate 2,000 passengers per hour initially, scaling up to 6,000 by 2059.
Stations will be strategically located, including Tara Devi, Chakkar Court, Tutikandi Parking, New ISBT, 103 Tunnel, Railway Station, Victory Tunnel, Old Bus Stand, Lakkar Bazar, IGMC, Sanjauli, Navbahar, Secretariat, and Lift.
Shimla MLA Harish Janartha said the ropeway will set up benchmark for public transport, giving residents an ecofriendly green transport in the capital city.
The project will integrate solar panels on gondolas and stations, enhancing its green credentials.
If one goes by the project officials, this ambitious project promises to revolutionize urban transport in Shimla, making it a trailblazer for ropeway systems worldwide.
