SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh High Court has taken a firm stance on the government's delay in appointing a Vice-Chancellor for Himachal Pradesh University.

The court imposed a fine of ₹7,000 on the state government as a penalty for this delay, highlighting its dissatisfaction with the prolonged vacancy in such a key position. Despite the court's rebuke, the government has finally scheduled interviews for the post, which are expected to take place next week in Chandigarh. A total of 22 applicants have been shortlisted and will be interviewed for the position.

The imposition of the fine is seen as a sharp criticism of the government's handling of the matter, reflecting judicial frustration with the bureaucratic delays.

This development follows similar cases where the court has intervened in instances of administrative inaction, as seen in cases related to prolonged vacancies in state health centers.

The appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor is critical for the functioning of Himachal Pradesh University, and this judicial intervention has added pressure on the government to expedite the process.

It remains to be seen whether the government will follow through with swift action in future appointments and governance issues.
