SHIMLA: Himachal Apple Farmers are in Limbo Over Carton Policy as Government Fails to Clarify Implementation of universal cartons. Those operating telescopic cartons out the state Mandis under which Act the stare government will take action...
With the apple season on the horizon, apple farmers in the state are caught in a whirlwind of confusion due to the government's vague carton policy.
The recent directive mandating the exclusive use of *universal cartons* within the state has left growers puzzled about its implications, especially for markets outside the state.
Apple growers are particularly concerned about the repercussions if they send apples in *telescopic cartons* to out-of-state markets.
Progressive Growers Association President Lokinder Bisht voices his frustration, saying, “We’ve received no clarity on whether using telescopic cartons outside the state will lead to penalties.
The Legal Metrology Act clearly states that all horticultural produce should be sold either by weight or count, yet the new policy creates ambiguity.”
Adding to their woes, state corrugators are either refusing orders or demanding advance payments for universal cartons.
Bisht adds, “State corrugators are not taking orders readily, and if they do, it’s strictly on advance payment terms, creating a significant challenge for us.”
Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi has yet to hold any meeting with growers or manufacturers to address this critical issue.
As the apple season approaches, the government's failure to provide clear guidelines or engage with stakeholders leaves farmers stranded and uncertain, risking a chaotic start to the harvest season.
