Himachal Pradesh Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar lauded the Indian Institute, Mandi at Kamand for developing the early warning system for predicting natural hazards. The concrete measures should be taken to make the technology more effective, he added.
In an interaction with the faculty of IIT Mandi, he said Forest Department and other line departments of the State should work in coordination with IIT, Mandi so that meaningful results could be generated in this direction.
Arlekar said we need to provide technology according to the demand of the society. The landslides are a serious problem in hilly states and particularly in Himachal as it causes loss of crores every year, he said.
He said such technology should be developed to mitigate the loss of life and property, which could find a permanent solution to this problem.
Emeritus Professor, School of Engineering S.C.Jain welcomed and honoured the Governor. He gave details of achievements and various initiatives of the Institute, saying that besides research, the IIT is also involved in its social responsibility activities by joining hands with the Community.
Earlier, Co-ordinator Geo. Hazard Studying Group, IIT, Mandi Dr. Kala V. Uday gave powerpoint presentation on Landslide Management. He briefed about active and passive measures for landslide mitigation of landslide.
Later, the Governor also planted a sapling in the premises.
Secretary to Governor Vivek Bhatia, senior officers of district administration, K.K. Bajre and faculty members were also present on the occasion.
