Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Telangana figured among the top most improved states in NITI Aayog’s 4th edition of state of health index in India. Himachal Pradesh comes third after Chhattisgarh and Haryana who are among the top achievers, but they have performed low incremental performance on the health index this time.
NITIAayog's 4th edition of state of health index report was released by Rajiv Kumar, Vice-Chairperson, NITI Aayog in New Delhi today. It is titled as Healthy States, Progressive India report on the ranks of states and union territories every year.
Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Telangana have improved on health index the most among the big states scoring more than 4.0 points in their incremental performance.
Chhatisgarh, Haryana Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka are ranked as top achievers in overall performance, but they fall in the category of “not improved from the present position”.
Among the smaller states, Mizoram topped the list with an overall health score of (75.77), Tripura ( 70.16), Sikkim (55.53) Goa (53.68), Meghalaya (43.05), Manipur (34.26), Arunachal Pradesh (33.91) on health index.
Karnataka, Gujarat and Punjab are also among top achievers but have not performed well further from their position. Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra are among front runners, but they did not improve and as such fall in the “least improved category, scoring between 0.01 - 2.01 points.
Bihar Orrisa and Uttarakhand figure among the least improved among big states, scoring 0.01 -2.0. Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh have improved moderately scoring 2.01- 4.0 points.
Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra are among the front runners, but they fall in the category of “least improved, moderately improved category as far as their latest performance on the health index is concerned.
Releasing the health index results, Rajiv Kumar said among 19 big states the best performance by far, has been done by Uttar Pradesh. “I want to congratulate Chief Minister of UP for this very strong performance and thus improvement over the last years”.
He said that Mizoram and Meghalaya have performed best among the smaller states, while UT of Jammu and Kashmir has topped among the UTs, This quantum incremental change demonstrates continued investment in health infrastructure and service delivery, he said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswas Surma said their efforts to transform Assam into a developed state have started bearing fruits. “Proud to share that our state has been recognized as the most improved performer in NITIAayog health index 2019- 20”.
Rajiv Kumar said that the fourth health index led by NITIAayog in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and family welfare and the World Bank is an annual ranking of all States and UTs on the overall levels of performance. The index has been instrumental in shifting the focus from inputs and outputs to outcomes”, he said.
