LEH/SHIMLA: Ladakhi Innovator Sonam Wangchuk claims he was put under ho/use arrest after his World’s First Climate neutral Fast Entered third day on January 27. He had started the fast on Republic Day at the premises his Himalayan Institute of Alternative Ladakh(HIAL) at Phang - 20 Degree temperature in solidarity with the melting glaciers.
Wangchuk in a video on social media charged that the UT LG had deployed heavy police force and has put him under house arrest.
Some employees who were with him have been detained, he alleged.
Wangchuk says that the UT Administration has shaken by his climate fast under Schedule 6th demand for the safeguard of Ladakh.
There is heavy presence of police around the venue of the fast in the open premises of HIAL
He had accused the UT LG of not utilising the budget of Rs 6000 Crore as most of its gets lapsed.
Only Rs 550 Crore is utilised by the Ladakh councils of Leh and Kargil District.
He has wrapped up himself in a polyfill sleeping bag bedded in open premises of HIAL and greeted the world with good morning at day one of the five day-long Climate Fast.
He could not reach Khardungla Pass at 18000 ft, the venue of his fast as UT Administration of Ladakh issued travel advisory not allowing any traffic on the highway to Khardungla due to snowfall.
"I still has sought permission from UT administration to at least allow me to go to the base of the Khardungla if not to the top of the Pass", he said.
The Ladakhi Innovator seeks to make his "Sun Power and Mud House" mantra as a Panacea for Climate Change in Ladakh and other Himalayan region.
Our Republic displays its Might at Janpath on Republic Day, Wangchuk instead started his fast at HIAL, Phang where temperature is -20 Degree Centigrade".
It was in the afternoon that Sonam Wangchuk cleared the air. He wished Happy Republic Day greetings to Indians and hoisted National Flag in the premises of HIAL to mark the day.
At the same time, Himalayan Affairs watchers have kept a close watch on Wangchuk's "agenda of 6th schedule".
They support his Climate fast. But his agenda casts him into a different avatar of a "political activist' apart from his trademark, "Climate change activist and Innovator, education reformist, who love to play with fire, sun. ice, earth .."
Why did Wangchuk choose Republic Day for his climate day fast?
Why he did not choose World Environment Day for this? Does he want to kill two birds with one stone?
The analysts are watching him with seriousness. Doesn't Wangchuk recognise India as a Republic? Is he thereby wiping up allegedly "anti-Republic sentiments in the sensitive Himalayan Region to gain some support outside India?
He needs to answer this big "Himalayan questions" .
He, however, told his twitteratis that he is there for "World’s first Carbon Neutral climate change fast" he is observing now at HIAL, Phang in -20 Degree Centigrade temperature in solidarity the melting glaciers.
He also clarifies that he is "national and with no affiliation", in a video.
After Article 370 was removed, there is no safeguards left for Ladakh, where winter becomes Polar region, where blizzards and snowstorms roar and Glaciers creak and groan.
"We need some safeguards in Ladakh to protect it from big mining mafias and other possible outside exploitation to save our glaciers and culture", he told in his video.
“If not now, then when, if not us, then who?”, says Sonam Wangchuk, seeking support of all citizens and communities in Himalayan region to join the climate fast.
But a lot of water has flown down the Indus river. Ladakh is now UT, a major demand of Ladakhis has been met as it has been liberated from the remote control of Elites of Jammu and Kashmir based in Srinagar.
Supported by the Prime Minister, UT administration has been implementing climate control agenda along with easing up the lifestyle of the Ladakhis to make their life easier and to make Ladakh carbon neutral.
No outsiders could make their inroads into Ladakh when it was a part of Jammu and Kashmir. Now there is no chance that socalled outside industries would spell doom for Ladakh as Wangchuk seems to fear or highlight by his climate change fast.
Ladakhis are batting for local eco-friendly industries run by locals to promote handlooms and handicrafts and its products. "Glaciers are lifeblood, but they cannot feed empty stomachs", commented locals.
Even as he had sought permission for the fast at Khardungla, but UT administration Ladakh did not oblige him.
But his lawyers told him, he has every right to go on fast under the constitution of India as he is not breaking any law.
Sonam Wangchuk has, however, got support from his fans for his climate fast for what he calls the "protection of Ladakh under 6th Schedule".
“It is not just from the government and Prime Minister Narender Modiji that we want safeguards for Ladakh under 6th Schedule”, he said.
But many smell a rat in his "hidden agenda".
"This agenda is much "more exclusive" than Article 370 and 35 A, "Second why he did he choose Republic Day for his so-called Climate Fast", the netizens asked him.
Is Wangchuk trying to get the support of the recalcitrant Chinese or other opponents of India across the world? He owes answer to these big questions as well, they say.
However, Wangchuk claims he has got support for his climate fast from different communities of Ladakh: Buddhist, Christians, Shias and Sunnis and others.
But surprisingly, the Ladakh Hill Development Council, the main political arm of the Ladakh region, has remained silent. So is the case with the Ladakh BJP MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal so far.
Wangchuk told his fans on social media that their main demands should be accepted.
"Second, the citizens in city should also protect Himalayan Glaciers and adopt lifestyles that are carbon neutral".
“We want lifestyle changes from the citizens too”, he said in a vide before he was to make his foray to the Khardungla Pass.
He had chosen Khardungla because its easter side highway goes to the China border and its north-western highway goes to Siachen glacier, the worlds’ highest battled field on Pakistan border.
Sonam has founded HIAL to propagate its ideas and programmes for Ladakh.
He connected with the world from his solar- heated mud house.
“You can see its completely overcast snowy polar conditions outdoors in Ladakh”.
"But then the good news is here the indoor temperatures, which is the minimum now, is plus 19.2", he said, highlighting the magic of his "Sun and Mud House Theory".
This is the power of sun. ‘All this is possible just thanks to sun and no other source of energy", he said.
He uses no fossil fuels, thus no pollution, no power and no power bills.
But Wangchuk is not alone espousing "solar and mud house" mantra for promotion of tourism and ecology in the cold desert of Ladakh and Lahaul-Sopiti and other region.
There are tribal owners of homestays in Lahaul-Spiti. They are running their eco-friendly ventures in the region and these have become a big tourist draw.
Even Border Roads Organisation has also set up a carbon neutral colony in Ladakh to promote solar power in Ladakh.
Wangchuk says the solar heating walls absorb the sun in the day and releases the heat at night, demonstrating power of Sun and sustainable carbon neutral technologies.
Talking about his fast, he sad: “It is a carbon neutral fast. My hot water will come from solar heaters. My electricity will be solar”.
“I am even working on a solar bed which will stay out in the open”, he said.
"It will absorb the sun in the day and give some comfort at night", Wangchuk said.
Solar is the way to go for the world. “ That’s what I will try and demonstrate on my world’s first climate neutral climate fast”, he said.
Wangchuk's climate fast has gone viral among his fans on social media.
Wangchuk took the world literate society by storm when this engineer-turned Innovator founded his school - Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh in 1988, which admits students who fail in other schools in Ladakh.
Many of them became achievers and national level ice hokey players as well.
How Ladakhis will respond to Wangchuk's call and how people will adopt his “Solar and Mud” mantra for making Ladakh and Himalayan states carbon neutral?
But Sonam Wangchuk has cleared: "I am very much national and has no affiliation.."
Will Ladakhis also adopt his "agenda under 6th Schedule ?". Will or will not Prime Minister Narendra Modi take call on Wangchuk's Climate Fast and under his Schedule 6th agenda? Only time will tell.
