SHIMLA: To mitigate forest fires in the state, State Government is enhancing its forest fire management strategy, focusing on elements such as strategic fire centers, interdepartmental coordination, funding, human resource development, research, and awareness programs.
This year the continuing spells of rains have come as a big solace for the department.
Forest fires however have significant impacts on the economy as many families depend on forest resources for their livelihood.
Himachal Pradesh, with its rich biodiversity and fragile Himalayan ecosystem, faces increasing fire incidents that pose risks to the environment, ecology, and economy.
While complete control over forest fires may not be possible, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasizes the importance of staying alert.
The State Forest Department has implemented a fire mapping system and identified sensitive forests for targeted prevention measures in collaboration with local communities and Panchayats.
To raise awareness about the damages caused by forest fires, mass contact programs are organized with the participation of local people, Panchayats, school children, and other stakeholders. Sensitivity maps have been created, marking areas prone to fires and establishing links for effective fire control.
The Forest Department has conducted virtual meetings with field officers and elected representatives of Panchayats to discuss fire prevention strategies.
Controlling human-caused fires, such as those resulting from agricultural activities, land clearing, or negligence, is crucial. Creating awareness, especially in rural areas, and involving local elected bodies are essential steps in mitigating forest fire risks.
The Department has also formed a Rapid Fire Action Team to promptly respond to fire incidents. The team uses platforms like WhatsApp to report fires to the Forest Department, while the local population is educated about the negative impacts of forest fires and their role in fire management.
