SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh Police have launched a hard-hitting campaign against drunken driving, and the numbers say it all.
From September 24 to October 1, cops checked 46,901 vehicles across the state, slapping 1,246 drivers with challans for driving under the influence—way up from the weekly average of 195.
As many as 290 people were arrested, a sharp rise from the usual 51.
Led by Director General of Police Dr. Atul Verma, this statewide crackdown is part of a larger effort to curb accidents and push for safer roads.
Offenders didn't just get a slap on the wrist—police recommended 483 licenses for suspension, compared to just 2032 all year before this campaign.
Some districts saw intense action. Solan topped the list with 143 challans and 33 arrests, followed by Mandi, where 134 drivers were penalized and 51 landed in jail. Baddi wasn’t far behind, with 106 challans and 39 arrests.
The police are urging the public to steer clear of drunk driving, reminding everyone that road safety is non-negotiable, said Narbir Rathaur, ASP TTR.
They’re keeping a close watch till October 8, and you can bet they’re not slowing down.
