Narkanda/Shimla, April 11: Sending out a powerful message from the heights of Himachal’s famed apple belt and tourist hotspot, Governor Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla today launched the state’s intensified Drug-Free Himachal Campaign, flagging off the 5th Silk Route Ultra Trail Run here today.
The event, set against the backdrop of snow-kissed peaks and blooming orchards, symbolized a rallying call for community action against the growing menace of drug abuse in the hill state.
Narkanda, known for its rich apple orchards. ski resort, and tourist high spot, provided a poignant setting for the campaign's message of resilience and revival.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla underscored the urgency of a united stand against drugs.
“The fight against drugs is not just the responsibility of the government — it is the duty of every individual in our society. We must work together to save our youth and preserve the cultural and spiritual sanctity of Devbhoomi Himachal,” he urged.
He further lauded the organizers, saying, “The Silk Route Ultra Trail Run is not just about sports; it’s a journey through the soul of Himachal Pradesh.
It revives our history and heritage, promotes adventure tourism, and opens new avenues of employment for our local youth.”
Adding her voice to the campaign, Additional Director General of Police and Commandant General, Home Guards, Smt. Satwant Atwal, highlighted the role of community vigilance in curbing drug trafficking and abuse.
“Community participation is critical. We need proactive engagement at every level to tackle this issue effectively. Events like these help spread awareness far and wide,” said Abhishek Trivedi, Additional DGP Law and Order.
“By bringing events like this to our highland communities, we are not only encouraging healthy lifestyles but also delivering a strong message against drugs, right at the grassroots level,” she noted.
The ultra trail run, organized by Himalayan Expedition, stretches 102 kilometers from Narkanda to Sarahan along the historic Hindustan-Tibet Road.
More than 250 runners from across India and three international athletes from France and Germany are participating, making the event a vibrant confluence of sports, culture, and social advocacy.
Supported by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department, Indian Oil, Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society, and HimEra, the event is not only promoting fitness and adventure tourism but also reinforcing the state’s resolve against substance abuse.
As the runners embarked on their challenging journey through Himachal’s rugged beauty, they carried with them not just the spirit of endurance but also the torch of a collective social mission — towards a healthier, drug-free Himachal.
