Shimla: In a significant achievement, Himachal Pradesh has recorded a noticeable decline in road accident cases between January and September 2024. It was due to "Drice Safe, Save lives' campaign.
According to official data, the state witnessed 1,524 accidents during this period, a marked reduction from the 1,685 cases reported in the same period last year.
The Himachal Pradesh Police credits this success to a comprehensive set of measures aimed at improving road safety.
1. Increased Traffic Enforcement:
The police intensified their on-ground presence, conducting regular traffic checks, especially on accident-prone routes.
Over 50,000 challans have been issued for traffic violations, from overspeeding to reckless driving, contributing to better compliance.
2. Spot Identification and Patrolling:
High-risk areas, commonly referred to as black spots, were identified through data mapping. Enhanced patrolling in these regions significantly reduced accidents.
3. Use of Technology:
Speed guns, breathalyzers, and surveillance cameras were extensively deployed to ensure real-time monitoring and deter traffic violations. Strict action against drunken driving has been a major focus.
4. Awareness Campaigns:
The police, in collaboration with various stakeholders, launched public awareness campaigns across schools, colleges, and commercial hubs to promote safe driving practices. Campaigns like “Drive Safe, Save Lives” were well received by the public.
5. Heavy Vehicle Monitoring:
Special drives targeted overloaded trucks and buses, a common cause of accidents in the hilly terrain.
The introduction of weighbridges and random checking led to stricter adherence to vehicle load limits.
Speaking on the success, a senior traffic police official remarked, “Our team’s coordinated efforts, along with public cooperation, have played a crucial role in bringing down accident figures. However, there is still more to be done to ensure safer roads.”
The state government also contributed by improving road infrastructure, especially in accident-prone areas, and placing better signage along highways.
With accident numbers dropping by over 160 cases compared to last year, authorities are determined to maintain this momentum.
They are calling on drivers to remain vigilant and continue following road safety rules to further reduce accidents in the coming months.
