SHIMLA: In response to the widespread destruction caused by heavy rains, the State Government has expanded 'Vidhayak Ksetra Vikas Nidhi Yojana' (VKVNY) for 2023-24.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu disclosed that the scheme will now encompass the funding of protection measures such as retaining walls and channelization of nullahs.
This decision aims to accelerate relief and rescue operations, following the devastating impact of torrential downpours on human lives and infrastructure.
Legislators are empowered to recommend and oversee the execution of these protective projects under VKVNY.
For eligibility, beneficiaries must furnish certification that retaining walls or breast walls have been compromised due to rains occurring after June 2023, posing a threat to their properties.
Revenue officers, Patwaris, or Gram Panchayat leaders are authorized to validate this risk.
Furthermore, the inclusion of nullah (stream) channelization in the scheme comes with specific criteria.
MLAs can endorse this work if Patwaris or Gram Panchayat heads affirm that recent rains have destabilized the terrain, necessitating immediate nullah or stream restructuring to safeguard private or communal assets.
The decision reflects the State Government's commitment to swift action and recovery in the face of natural calamities.
