Shimla:  Human rights are the cornerstone of peace, dignity, and equality.

This sentiment was echoed by experts and academicians at a National Seminar organized by the Department of Public Administration, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), on International Human Rights Day.

Speakers from diverse fields shed light on gender equality, youth empowerment, cinema as a tool for awareness, and the need for compassion to uphold these fundamental freedoms.

The seminar clinched its motto with Chairperson Prof. Mamta Mokta’s call to action: “Protecting human rights today is essential to building a future where everyone can live with dignity, freedom, and peace.”

Inaugurating the seminar, Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Rajinder Verma described human rights as “the means to achieve societal peace,” tracing their evolution from ancient texts to constitutional safeguards worldwide.

His call to protect human rights today for a better tomorrow set the tone for the event.

Gender Equality and Fundamental Rights

Ms. Rupali Thakur (IAS), Director HIPA, highlighted gender inequality as a persistent challenge. She said, "Men and women are equal, not identical."

DIG (Law and Order) Ms. Ranjana Chauhan added that the right to life is the bedrock of all other rights, which evolve to make life meaningful and just.

Youth and Human Rights Advocacy

Dr. T. Gopinath from RGNIYD Chandigarh appealed to the youth, saying, “Young people are not useless but used less, and not careless but cared less.”

His call for proactive youth participation was echoed by others, emphasizing their role as changemakers.

Cinema and Awareness

The short filmmaker Ms. Dev Kanya Thakur underscored the power of films in raising awareness about violations against children, women, and prisoners, calling them a catalyst for societal change.

Elderly Rights and Dignity

Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Head of HelpAge India (HP and Ladakh), advocated for elderly rights, pressing for income, health, and food security, along with reserved hospital beds for senior citizens.

Historical Roots and Humane Approach

Prof. Lalit Dadwal traced the origins of human rights to ancient Indian scriptures.

Prof. Pramod Sharma emphasized the need for compassion as the foundation for protecting these rights.

The  seminar was  attended by over 100 scholars, included paper presentations, discussions.

The four speakers—Ms. Rupali Thakur, Ms. Ranjana Chauhan, Ms. Dev Kanya Thakur, and Dr. Rajesh Kuma were felicitated for their contributions to human rights advocacy on the occasion.

Professor Mamta Mokta, Dean of Students’ Welfare also lauded her team, including faculty members Dr. Munish Dulta, Dr. Sapna Sharma, Dr. Kusum Azad, Dr. Meera Chauhan, and Dr. Meera Sharma, along with research scholars Raman, Ramesh Kumar, Madan Negi, Begi Ram, Rajneesh, Babita, Bhumi Ram, Hirveshi, Anamika, Manju Kataria, and Udit. Non-teaching staff Sanjay and Vishakha were also commended for their efforts in making the event a success

The seminar was organized in collaboration with the American Society of Public Administration and International Political Science Association.
