Ladakh Officials Celebrating Literacy achievements in Leh

Ladakh Celebrates Full Functional Literacy, Achieves Major Milestone...

Leh: Ladakh, one of India's remotest Union Territories, has proudly declared its achievement of full functional literacy, a significant milestone that marks its commitment to education and empowerment.

The announcement was made by Lieutenant Governor Dr. B.D. Mishra at a celebratory event at the Sindhu Sanskritik Kendra in Leh, with Ladakh reaching an impressive literacy rate of over 97%.

In the presence of key figures like Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, and other dignitaries, Dr. Mishra lauded the efforts of everyone involved.

The celebration honored more than 500 new literates and volunteer teachers who have been instrumental in this achievement under the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, a part of the New India Literacy Programme (NILP).

ULLAS, initiated in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focuses on providing foundational literacy and numeracy, critical life skills, basic education, and vocational training. This scheme, driven by volunteerism through the ULLAS Mobile App, has significantly uplifted Ladakh’s literacy rates since its inception in 2022.

During the event, Dr. Mishra emphasized the importance of continuous learning and urged parents to ensure their children attend school. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s NEP 2020, highlighting its role in shaping the future of education in India.

Shri Sanjay Kumar congratulated Ladakhis for their remarkable achievement, underscoring the Ministry's ongoing support to further enhance the region's education system. He pointed out how the ULLAS program, rooted in volunteerism, has brought joy to countless new learners, despite challenges like severe weather conditions.

The ceremony also featured the release of the Annual Achievement Report 2023 for Ladakh’s school department and a visit to the ULLAS Mela, celebrating the region's dedication to literacy and continuous education.

This success story of Ladakh, despite its geographical isolation, is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the relentless pursuit of knowledge, setting an inspiring example for other regions.
