SHIMLA: As India's economy is growing, the energy consumption has doubled in the past decade and is projected to grow by at least 25% by 2030, reveal energy experts here today.

Sectors like transportation and industrial production heavily rely on imported fossil fuels, say the energy experts here today at the workshop.

The workshop was attended by representatives from different departments and organizations, including the Municipal Corporation, Smart City Ltd., and various government bodies related to energy and infrastructure.

To address this rising demand, India has made significant investments in improving its power infrastructure, they inform.

The country has added thousands of substations, upgraded existing ones, and installed numerous transformers.

As a result, rural areas now have access to power for 22.5 hours a day, compared to 12 hours in 2015.

Despite surging energy prices worldwide, India has managed to keep its energy prices stable.

In the last quarter alone, India's power demands have grown by 12-12.5%, with an increase of over  25,000 MW compared to the same period last year.

The country aims to expand its installed power generation capacity to 800 GW by 2030. In line with this goal, the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill 2022 was introduced in the Lok Sabha to promote energy efficiency measures across various sectors of the economy.

In support of these efforts, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Government of India, collaborated with the Directorate of Energy (DoE), Government of Himachal Pradesh to raise awareness and implement energy efficiency measures.

During the workshop, speakers emphasized the importance of energy conservation and efficiency in municipalities, as they account for a significant portion of energy consumption in the country.

The implementation of policies and institutional frameworks, along with large-scale programs focused on alternative resources like Demand Side Management (DSM), energy efficiency, and renewable energy, were highlighted.

Various technical sessions were conducted during the workshop, covering topics such as the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), building energy efficiency, smart city development, integration of energy efficiency in urban planning, electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, financing models for local bodies, and energy efficiency in water pumping.

At the end of the program, all participants were awarded participation certificates, recognizing their contribution to promoting energy efficiency and conservation in their respective areas.
