SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu accused the previous BJP government of compromising the state's interests by allegedly granting undue favors to power project companies.

Speaking to the media outside the Vidhan Sabha, Sukhu voiced his concerns.

He stated, "In the initial 10 years, it was promised that we would receive 4% electricity, and in the subsequent 10 to 25 years, until 2012, the previous Bharatiya Janata Party government made alterations.

"Prior to these changes, our government had agreements with 12 different entities. The Bharatiya Janata Party should review its energy policy, which has undergone changes from 4% to 22% over the years."

Sukhu continued, "Our government has invested Rs. 26 crores in these projects. Following our government's formation, we revised the royalty rates, increasing it from 12% to 18% for the first 12 to 30 years and 30% for the subsequent 30 to 40 years.

Furthermore, we mandated that these projects return to Himachal Pradesh after 40 years."

He criticized the changes made by the previous government, saying, "The BJP government altered the terms, reducing royalty rates to 4% in the first 10 years, 8% in the following 10 to 25 years, and 12% in the 25 to 40-year period. Additionally, they eliminated the provision for projects to return to the state after 40 years."

Sukhu highlighted their efforts to rectify the situation, saying, "Our government has issued a notice to these project operators, demanding either free electricity for the initial 10 years or a progressive royalty plan of 20% in the first 10 years, 30% in the following 10, and 40% in the 30 to 40-year range, with the condition that the projects must eventually revert to the state. Responding to our letter, some operators expressed willingness to negotiate."

He further noted, "The matter was brought before the High Court, which stressed the importance of settling the issue in a way that safeguards Himachal's future. If necessary, the government is prepared to undertake these projects independently.

"This is a significant concern that requires immediate attention, and it has been discussed within the cabinet extensively."

In conclusion, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed his commitment to protecting the interests of Himachal Pradesh and ensuring a fair resolution to the power project dispute.
