Shimla: A foreign national was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a private hotel room in Shimla late Friday night, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Beri Elvin Maus (86), a citizen of the United Kingdom. He had arrived in Shimla just a day earlier and was staying at a hotel in the Kaithu area.
According to the police, hotel staff grew suspicious when Maus did not respond despite repeated knocks on his room door.
On entering the room, they found him lying unconscious and immediately alerted the police around midnight. He was rushed to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police said the UK Embassy has been informed about the incident.
The police has sealed the room for forensic examination and is examining the CCTV Footage.
A case has been registered under Section 192 and inquest proceedings have been initiated.
Police stated that the tourist had consumed some liquor.
The exact cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem report, which is awaited and forensic examinations.
SP Shimla told media that they are investigating every aspect of the case.
