High Court Bench Finally Comes to Ladakh, Justice Reaches Doorstep of People at Dizzying Heights

Justice has finally come closer to the people of Ladakh, with the Regulation governing the sitting of a Bench of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in the Union Territory coming into effect on Saturday.
The long-awaited High Court Bench is being hailed as a landmark step that will bring justice to the doorstep of Ladakhis, particularly those living in remote and far-flung areas.
Welcoming the development, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh V. K. Saxena said the move would save valuable time and resources of the people and significantly strengthen access to justice across the Union Territory.
For Ladakhis, the Bench ends a long-standing hardship. Pursuing High Court cases earlier often meant undertaking a long and arduous journey outside the UT, including crossing the bone-chilling and frequently challenging Zojila Pass, besides bearing heavy expenses on travel, accommodation and legal proceedings.
The physical distance had been a major barrier, particularly for people from remote parts of Ladakh. The establishment of a Bench in the UT was therefore long overdue.
With the regulation now in force, litigants will have substantially easier access to High Court proceedings without having to make repeated journeys across difficult Himalayan terrain.
Saxena expressed gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu for promulgating the historic regulation and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their continued support to the inclusive development of Ladakh.
The move marks another significant institutional milestone for the Union Territory, bringing the higher judiciary closer to a population living in one of the country’s most remote and geographically challenging regions.
After years of waiting, the High Court Bench has finally reached Ladakh—meaning justice need no longer begin with a costly journey across the mountains.
