Shimla: The Bar Council, Shimla, organized a programme at the District Court, Chakkar to celebrate Constitution Day on Monday. Justice Virendra Singh of the Himachal Pradesh High Court presided over the event, emphasizing the importance of the fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Virendra Singh underlined the significance of fulfilling fundamental duties alongside exercising fundamental rights.
“While fighting for our rights, we often forget our duties,” Justice Singh remarked. He stressed the importance of respecting national symbols such as the National Anthem, National Flag, and Constitution.
Highlighting the role of citizens in promoting peace and environmental conservation, he said, “Staying away from violence and protecting the environment are key aspects of our duties as citizens.”
Justice Singh also pointed out that societal progress is rooted in a balance between rights and duties.
He urged citizens to become more aware of their responsibilities, stating, “We can assert our rights only if we don’t encroach upon the rights of others.
"Holistic development of society can only be achieved when duties are given as much importance as rights.”
Reflecting on the inclusion of fundamental duties in the Constitution under Article 51A, he explained how these duties serve as guiding principles for maintaining societal harmony and environmental sustainability.
Justice Singh cited examples of pollution and environmental degradation as areas where citizen awareness and action are crucial.
He concluded by reminding the audience of the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle, which paved the way for the democratic rights and privileges we enjoy today.
“The Indian Tricolour is a symbol of our collective struggle and pride,” he said, urging everyone to uphold the values it represents.
The programme fostered discussions among legal professionals and attendees, reiterating the importance of constitutional values in contemporary times.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Parishad Provincial Minister Amit Chandel, District President Sanjeev Sharma, General Secretary Varun Dev, and several advocates from the District Court.
