BJP Walks Out Over Vimal Negi’s Death, CM Sukhu Fires Back with BJP Ex-MP Suicide Case Reference
Shimla |Himachal Assembly on Monday witnessed high drama over the mysterious death of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) General Manager Vimal Negi, with the Opposition BJP staging a walkout while leveling serious allegations of corruption against the Congress government.
Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur accused the government of shielding powerful people behind HPPCL’s shady hydro projects in Una and Kinnaur, where Negi—a known upright officer—was allegedly under pressure.
“The government’s reluctance for a CBI probe raises suspicions. What are they trying to hide? The CBI probe will open Pandora's box of corruption in HPPCL,” thundered Thakur before leading the BJP MLAs out of the House.
BJP accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of being ‘seized with fear’ that a CBI probe would unmask a multi-crore scam in HPPCL projects, where Negi reportedly resisted illegalities.
“The officer was forced… and now they want to hush it up,” BJP MLAs alleged.
CM Sukhu hits back, rakes up BJP’s past sins
CM Sukhu didn’t hold back. Hitting the BJP where it hurts, he reminded the House of the mysterious suicide of former BJP MP Ram Swarup Sharma a few years ago. “Back then, it was your government. Why didn’t you demand a CBI probe then? Now you are playing politics over a death,” said Sukhu.
Sukhu maintained that a judicial probe was already underway in Vimal Negi’s case, and called BJP’s demand for a CBI probe “a political stunt” aimed at diverting attention. “We are committed to a fair probe, but we won’t dance to BJP’s tune,” he said.
Meanwhile, sources confirm that HPPCL’s controversial hydro projects, marred by cost overruns and delays, have become a hotbed of corruption, with officers like Negi facing pressure to fall in line.
The case has now snowballed into a major political controversy with both sides trading charges.
Vimal Negi’s family and colleagues continue to demand a high-level probe to unearth the truth.
