MAJOR SOM NATH SHARMA, A MEMOIR IN BRAVERY

SHIMLA/DHARAMSHALA : The legacy of Major Somnath Sharma—India's first Param Vir Chakra recipient and a proud son of Himachal Pradesh—stands as an immortal chapter of valor in the annals of the Indian Army.

The Hero of Badgam: A Memoir in Bravery

Born into a distinguished military family in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, Major Somnath Sharma’s finest and final hour came on November 3, 1947, in the snow-kissed valleys of Kashmir.

The Mission: Commuting a company of the 4th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment, then-Major Sharma was tasked with defending the Srinagar airport against a massive tribal raider onslaught.

Heavily outnumbered by a force nearly seven times their size, his company came under vicious mortar and automatic fire in the village of Badgam.

Despite a fractured left arm encased in a plaster cast from a previous injury, Major Sharma personally filled magazines, rushed through open fire to direct artillery shells onto advancing enemy lines, and kept his men's morale unbreakable.

The Ultimate Sacrifice: Just as his last radio message crackled through—stating that the enemy was only yards away and that his men would not yield an inch—a mortar shell exploded on a stack of ammunition near him.

He made the supreme sacrifice, paving the way with his life for the defense of the Kashmir Valley.

For his "indomitable courage, grit and disregard for personal safety," he was posthumously awarded India's highest wartime gallantry medal, the Param Vir Chakra.

Honoring the Legacy: The Vision of the Leadership

Reflecting on such monumental sacrifices, the military leadership—including General Dhiraj Seth, Chief of the Army Staff—frequently underscores that the modern modernization and operational preparedness of the Indian Armed Forces are built squarely on the foundational blood and valor of heroes like Major Somnath Sharma.

Commemorations across the nation and in his home state of Himachal Pradesh serve as solemn reminders: nations that remember their brave hearts ensure that their ethos of duty, honor, and country remains evergreen through generations.
