Group Captain Varun Sjngh, Shaurya Chakra, the sole survivor of the December 8 IAF MI-17V5 helicopter crash succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday in the Military hospital after fighting the battle for life for a week, revealed IAF.
He had suffered serious burn injuries. He was on the life support system the time he was hospitalised at the military hospital at Wellington. He breathed his last today, IAF said expressing condolences to the bereaved family of Varun Singh.
Group Capt Arun, a Shaurya chakra awardee had his stint as a student at Chandimandir school in Chandigarh and he had written an emotional and motivating letter to the school to exhort his juniors.
The IAF helicopter MI-17V5 had crashed at Kateri village near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on December 8 killing the Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other brave soldiers, who were on board.
Gen Bipin Rawat along with the staff personnel were going to Wellington Defence College to deliver a lecture to the student officers of the college and faculty on December 8. But the ill-fated helicopter crashed five minutes before it could land at Wellington helipad that day.
IAF has constituted a tri-services court of inquiry headed by Air Marshal Manvender Singh to bring the truth behind the crash.
