SHIMLA: As many as 1000 patients get neurosurgical treatment at IGMC, Shimla now in a year. 11 neurosurgeons- eight in the government sector and three in the private hospitals- are rendering their specialist service to the critical injured patients, bringing a big relief to people in Himachal Pradesh.
This, in turn, has strengthened Neurosurgery patient care facilities at IGMC, Shimla and RPGMC, Tanda in Himachal Pradesh for last few years, said the neurosurgeons.
As many as five neurosurgeons are rendering their specialist service to the patients at Indira Gandhi Medical College(IGMC) Shimla and three others at Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC), Tanda in Kangra district.
IGMC is the biggest medical college of the State Government. It, at present, has created five posts of Neurosurgeons and all the five are in position, said Dr Janak Raj, senior medical superintendent, who also heads the Department of Neurosurgery, IGMC.
Apart from Dr. Janak Raj, other four neurosurgeons are Dr Dyan Chand, Dr. Vineet, Dr. Viplav, Dr. Akshat, all Assistant professors are working in the department. In addition, IGMC is also providing the post-graduate training at the Department of Neurosurgery since 2021, said Dr Janak Raj.
At present, the two trainee doctors are studying neurosurgery here. Dr. Vikram is studying M.C.H. Neurosurgery in the second year Dr. Niti Modi is undergoing M.C.H. first year training.
Tanda has Three Neurosurgeons
In the Kangra district, as many as three neurosurgeons are working in Tanda, the second largest medical college in the state. Dr. Amit Joshi, Heads the Department of Neurosurgery, Dr. Mukesh Sharma and Dr. Sharish Nalin are working as Assistant Professor.
A few years ago, many people had to suffer for head or spinal cord injury and other diseases as there were one neurosurgeon at IGMC. Many a times, the patients were referred to outside the state for treatment, Dr Janak Raj said.
1000 Patients Get Treatment and They No Longer Go Out of Himachal
At present, we are operating over 1000 patients at IGMC in a year, Dr Janak Raj said. "The patients have no longer have to go outside the state for treatment. “In addition, as many as three neurosurgeons are also employed in the private sector hospitals”, Dr Janak Raj said.
