J&K Finance Department Takes Up UDF Demand to Raise MBBS, BDS Intern Stipend to ₹30,000
Jammu/Srinagar, September 16, 2026: The demand of the United Doctors Front (UDF) to increase the monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS interns in Jammu and Kashmir from ₹12,300 to ₹30,000 has moved forward, with the Finance Department referring the organisation’s representation to the Health & Medical Education Department for examination.
According to UDF, the Finance Department, through its communication dated September 15, has forwarded the representation submitted by the doctors’ organisation on September 6 for examination and further necessary action under the applicable rules.
The Finance Department has also advised the Health & Medical Education Department to undertake a comprehensive review of the existing fee structure and take appropriate measures for its rationalisation and alignment with fee structures prevailing in other States and Union Territories, UDF said.
UDF Chairperson Dr. Lakshya Mittal said the development was an important step towards addressing what the organisation described as a long-pending issue concerning inadequate internship stipends in J&K.
“MBBS and BDS interns work full-time in hospitals, shoulder substantial clinical responsibilities and form an essential part of the healthcare delivery system. A stipend of ₹12,300 is significantly out of step with the financial realities and prevailing structures in many parts of the country,” Mittal said.
UDF said it has urged the Health & Medical Education Department to examine the matter in a time-bound manner and consider increasing the stipend to ₹30,000 per month.
The organisation also raised the broader issues of stipend parity, timely payment and rationalisation of internship remuneration, saying these were important for ensuring fair treatment of medical and dental interns.
UDF, however, clarified that the Finance Department’s communication only marks the official processing and examination of its representation and does not amount to approval of the proposed ₹30,000 stipend.
The organisation said it would continue pursuing the demand with the concerned authorities until a final decision is taken.
