Bychari School Eco Club Spearheads E-Waste Collection and Safe Disposal Drive

Shimla: Taking a proactive stand against the growing threat of discarded electronics, the Eco Club and Bharat Scouts and Guides unit of Shaheed Ved Prakash Government Senior Secondary School (SVPGSSS), Bychari, in Shimla district, organized a comprehensive campus-level campaign on October 28 to promote an e-waste-free environment and cleanliness.

Conducted as part of the school's scheduled annual activity calendar, the initiative focused on educating students about the severe environmental and health hazards posed by electronic waste, alongside practical methods for its safe collection, recycling, and scientific disposal.

The drive commenced during the morning assembly with an informative address by student Mansi Sharma, who highlighted the toxic impact of electronic waste on human health and the surrounding ecosystem.

Rather than relying on external experts, the technical and awareness sessions were spearheaded in-house by Eco Club and Bharat Scouts and Guides Incharge Deepika (Lecturer in Economics) and Co-Incharge Harish Kumar (TGT Medical), alongside the school's medical and science faculty.

They mobilized students to pool together defunct electronic items present across the campus and educated them on how hazardous materials in discarded appliances pollute soil and water sources.

Following the afternoon recess, students gathered in the main school hall for an inter-house quiz competition centered on e-waste management and ecological safety. Four teams competed in the event: Team A (Naman and Harshita), Team B (Niharika and Kanchan), Team C (Parth and Muskan), and Team D (Ishika and Vanshika). Team D clinched the first position, while Team A secured the runner-up spot.

Addressing the gathering in the concluding session, Principal Dr. Rajender Kumar Bansal felicitated the winners and detailed the critical importance of recycling and safe e-waste disposal. He cautioned that obsolete mobile phones, computers, batteries, and other defunct electronic gadgets must never be mixed with regular household trash, but instead routed through authorized collection centers.

Attended by the entire teaching faculty, the program concluded with the Principal calling upon students to act as grassroots ambassadors and carry the message of scientific e-waste management and environmental conservation to the wider community.
