MANALI:  A 11-member team of mountaineers from ABVIMAS in this tourist town has set on a mission to climb the 6105 m high peak in Zing Zing Bar valley in Darcha in Lahaul-Spiti.

Once they accomplish it, the peak will be named after Harnam Singh Thakur as a mark of tribute to  the founder and longest serving director of the ABVIMAS.

The expedition is also a part of celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahatosav at ABVIMAS. The peak would be named as Mount Harnam Singh Thakur Tibba.

Late Harnam Singh Thakur was not only a founder director, he was also the longest serving director of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports(ABVIMAS), Manali, who explored adventure sports in Himachal Pradesh for long 25 years from 1961- 1986.

Taking an initiative in remembrance of Harnam Singh Thakur, the alumni of ABVIMAS in association with the Institute  embarked on a mission  here to conquer this maiden Tibba to name it after him.

They choose this “unclimbed and unnamed” peak for giving a befitting tribute to the founder Director Harnam Singh Thakur. He is survived by his wife,  Viplove Thakur, a senior Congress leader and former MP  from Kangra and two daughters.

The 11-member team intends to conquer the unconquered and unnamed peak in Zing Zing Bar, which is in Darcha panchayat of Lahaul-Spiti district.

The 11-member team is led by a 2007 batch Indian Revenue Service officer, Vikrant Pal Singh, who is currently serving as an additional commissioner of income tax in Kolkata.

As soon as the mountaineers conquer the summit, the team intends name the peak after  Harnam  Singh Thakur.

Thakur was instrumental in formation of the ABVIMAS in  1961. Thakur has been the longest serving director from Sept 1961 to August 1984 and contributed immensely to promotion of adventure tourism in the state.

The institute has become a major rallying point for adventure and nature-lovers in the tourist town of Manali that has brought name and fame for Manali and Himachal Pradesh in the tourism sector for last 62 years.

It now attracts amateurs from across India and abroad for training in Adventure sports, Aqua and Aero sports.

Flagging-off the expedition here on Thursday, Director, ABVIMAS Avinash Negi said expedition to Zing Zing Bar has got clearance from Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF),  New Delhi. The expedition will promote adventure tourism in Himachal Pradesh, Negi said.

The expedition is also a part of 75 years of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav currently being celebrated at ABVIMAS, Negi said. The team will be technically assisted by Pawan Thakur, an instructor at ABVIMAS.

The team will send an expedition report and a proposal to IMF for naming the peak after Harnam Singh Thakur, Negi said.
