Western Command Sets Stage for 'Mech Tech 2.0': A New Era of Intelligent Warfare Powered by Robotics, AI, and Indigenous Tech

CHANDIMANDIR — The Indian Army’s Western Command is all set to host Mech Tech Seminar 2.0, a high-stakes defence technology summit aimed at preparing existing military hardware for the demands of modern, intelligent warfare powered by robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced tactical systems.

Addressing the curtain-raiser event ahead of the main showcase scheduled for December 14 and 15 at Chandimandir, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command, Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh, outlined a pragmatic doctrine for the future battlefield that merges legacy military muscle with next-generation smart technology.

With drones, artificial intelligence, autonomous robotics, and precision-guided munitions rapidly rewriting global combat doctrines, the Western Command is shifting focus from wholesale fleet replacements to high-tech modernization. Anchored by the theme "Transforming Existing Platforms for Future Combat," the upcoming summit seeks to integrate super-intelligent systems, automated targeting, and survivability upgrades directly into the Army’s current mechanized and combat inventory.

"Drones, artificial intelligence, precision weapons, and other emerging technologies are transforming the way that wars are fought in the current era," Lt Gen Pushpendra Pal Singh said during the address. "However, to stay ahead, we must not only develop new capabilities, but also find smarter ways to make our existing military platforms more effective, lethal, and more survivable. This is precisely the thinking behind Mech Tech Seminar 2.0."

Emphasizing the economic and logistical realities of modern defence preparedness, the Army Commander noted that the armed forces cannot replace their entire fleet every time a new technology emerges. Instead, the strategic objective is to harness the best of Indian innovation to make existing combat platforms smarter, stronger, and far more capable against emerging threats.

What sets this initiative apart from traditional defence procurement models is its soldier-centric, bottom-up approach. Rather than simply surveying what commercial technology is already available on the market, military planners began by auditing the exact operational hurdles faced by troops on the ground.

"Instead of simply looking at what technology is available, we have started by asking a more important question: What are the actual challenges our soldiers face on the ground and how can technology help overcome them?" Lt Gen Singh explained. Based on these frontline operational requirements, the Western Command has identified specific tactical gaps and formulated detailed problem definition statements, which are now being shared with Indian industry leaders, deep-tech startups, and academic institutions to engineer practical, affordable, and indigenous solutions.

The two-day December summit in Chandimandir will bring together top military brass, private R&D innovators, and academic researchers under one roof to exchange ideas, showcase emerging technologies, and test niche solutions tailored to real battlefield needs.

According to Lt Gen Singh, the ultimate measure of success for Mech Tech 2.0 goes beyond static exhibitions.

Promising prototypes and AI-driven upgrades developed through this collaboration will eventually find their way directly into the hands of frontline soldiers, enhancing overall combat effectiveness, building a robust domestic defence innovation ecosystem, and giving greater momentum to Atmanirbhar Bharat.
