NIRF Ranking results being released in New Delhi by Education minister Pradhan

Shimla:  Tamil Nadu, mainly Chennai remains India’s top engineering hub with 15 institutions figuring among top 100 in NIRF ranking. But three IITs, two NITs and two private institutions are also setting high standards in engineering for a knowledge-based economy in Himalayan states among over competing 1249 institutions in the country.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras continued to be a Indian leader in engineering in 7th year in a row.  It is  followed by IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur are first five top leaders in engineering in India as per NIRF ranking.

Tamil Nadu has overshadowed other states in India and is a leader in engineering, with over 15 engineering institutes figuring among top 100 in NIRF rankings- 2022 in which over 1249 institutes participated.

Idea of NIRF and NAAC rankings is  to make India a global dizital  knowledge-based economy in which institutions are key players.

NIRF ranking aims at making India a leading innovation and digital economy and making quality education accessible and affordable for common man.

Even India’s top three private institutes- Vellore Institute of Technology (NIRF rank 12), Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore (I9), SRM institute of science and technology, Chennai (24)- all are in Tamil Nadu.

Nearer in Himalayan states two older IITs- IIT   Roorkee in Uttarakhand and IIT Guwahati figured among first top engineering institutes, while new comer IIT Mandi among Himalayan states has leapfrogged to 20th rank in NIRF-2022 rankings, the results for which were released on July 15.

Now on, only those institutions which have NAAC or NIRF ranking will be eligible for list to be maintained by  UGC and for financial assistance under Section 12 B, UGC Act, 1956.

IIT Madras scored 90.04, the only IIT in India to do so in engineering as well as overall category in country.  It has maintained its standards in engineering consecutively in a row over the years in India.

Other four top engineering institutes  in Indian are  IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur with scores of 88.12, 83.56, 82.56, 78.89 respectively.

It is the IITs which continue to dominate the engineering category, standing out as first top 10 engineering institutes in the country.

After India’s top five IITs, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, IIT Tiruchirappalli, IIT Hyderabad. IIT Surathkal in Karnataka stand out among top ten of country, demonstrating that  the government of India continues to be a trend setter in engineering.

The private institutions continuing to struggle, but top among them are closing in behind IITs mainly in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the cutting-edge engineering hub of India.

What is noteworthy is that three IITs in the Himalayan states- IIT Roorkee with its score of 76.77, IIT Guwahati (72.98) and new comer IIT Mandi with its score of 60.43-  have ranked among top 20 as per NIRF Rankings-2022.

IIT Mandi has ranked 20 in Engineering category while it has climbed 39 places in the overall category in NIRF- 2022.

The two private institutes- UPES Dehradun, Graphic Era university, Dehradun- figure among first 100 with NIRF rank of 61, and 64.

But other private institutions in Himalayan states mainly in Himachal Pradesh, which has over 15 private universities are not doing well as per NIRF.  And as such they face a steep climb to improve their rankings.

IITs and NITs (National Institutes Technology) are still better in Himalayan states if you consider the list of 1249 institutions which participated in NIRF rankings-2022.

But the score of most institutes remains below 45.  As such they have to go miles to improve on all parameters of NIRF rankings to make it 60 or so.

Shining in the mountains are UPES, Dehradun (61), Graphic Era university, Dehradun (64), NIT, Srinagar Jammu and Kashmir (66), NIT Agartala (80).

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi university, Katara Jammu (101), NIT Imphal Manipur (108), NIT Assam, Guwahati (112),  Tezpur university, Assam (123), NIT Hamirpur, Himachal (128), NIT Srinagar (Garhwal), Uttarakhand (131).

Apart from these,  the two other newer institutes in Northeast- NIT Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh (171),  NIT Sikkim (173)- have also thousands  of miles to climb the NIRF ladder that pose a big challenger to the faculties and the government agencies to improve the ranking for a brighter future in the science and technology.

Nearer in north,  Thapar institute of engineering and technology, Patiala (28), Chandigarh university, Mohali (45), NIT Kurukshetra(50),  NIT Phagwara Punjab(50), NIT Jalandhar(51), but older institutes- Punjab engineering college Chandigarh ( 87), Panjab university Chandigarh ( 92) are lagging behind.

Among the private institutes UPES Dehradun figures among first 100 with NIRF rank of 61. Shoolini university of Biotechnology and Management, Solan is ranked 125, Jaypee University of Information Technology, Vaknaghat Solan ranked  138 and DIT Dehradun is at 179.

Indian rankings-2022 was conducted by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Education, Government of India to imoprovise the institutional standards in the country to make them globally competitive.

Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education announced the NIRF 2022 results on July 15.

Pradhan said, “all CFTIs, deemed universities & private institutes should follow three frameworks,  Accreditation,  Ranking, Assessment”.

He said innovation and entrepreneurship will be included as one of the parameters of ARIIA from next year onwards to avoid duplicity.

Pradhan said Government of India aims to make the education system of India affordable for the common students in which digitalization will play a vital role.
