CBI Nabs NMC Assessor Taking Rs 10 Lakh Bribe, Recovers Over Rs 54 Lakh in Cash – Noble Profession or Notorious Profiteering?

New Delhi/Belgaum | May 26, 2025 – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has ripped the mask off a shameful racket that exposes how some corrupt medical professionals are turning the noble profession into a dirty business.

In a swift operation, CBI arrested a senior doctor associated with the National Medical Commission (NMC) for accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a private medical college in Belgaum, Karnataka.

His “favour” in return? A clean chit inspection report – potentially opening the gates for substandard medical education.

The trap was laid on May 24 after the agency registered a case against the doctor, two private individuals, and the concerned medical college.

The CBI caught the doctor red-handed with the bribe cash in hand.

But that was just the beginning.

Raids across Kolkata, Bardhaman, and Belgaum led to the recovery of an additional Rs 44.6 lakh in unaccounted cash, along with stacks of incriminating documents. The total cash haul? Rs 54.6 lakh.

Sources said the doctor, who was supposed to ensure quality in medical education, was instead peddling his authority for personal gain, casting a dark shadow over the medical regulatory system.

The accused will be produced before court soon, while the investigation continues to unearth the full scale of the rot.

Once seen as the saviours of lives, some in the medical fraternity seem more interested in minting money than maintaining integrity.

The CBI’s crackdown lays bare how inspection reports are being sold to the highest bidder – and how lives and future doctors may be paying the price.
