NEW DELHI — In a major push to bolster border security, operational readiness, and troop logistics, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has approved a comprehensive suite of high-priority road, tunnel, and highway upgrades across India’s sensitive Himalayan states and Union Territories.
The extensive infrastructure expansion covers critical border corridors spanning Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir, establishing vital all-weather routes and alternative tactical connectivity along the northern and eastern frontiers.
9 Strategic Projects of National Importance Declared
According to an official memorandum issued by the Ministry of Defence (BR-I Division) on August 13, 2026, nine major road and tunnel projects have been formally declared as Strategic Projects of National Importance.
Developed and maintained via the Strategic Road Head Fund under the aegis of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), these projects follow inter-se prioritization assigned directly by the Directorate General of Military Operations (DGMO):
Priority I Strategic Infrastructure:
Arunachal Pradesh: Construction of the Yinkiong–Jidu–Bishing road (an essential inter-connectivity corridor), development of the Gogamukh–Dollungmukh–Daporijo stretch along the Gogamukh–Daporijo–Taliha–Tato corridor, and the Akajan–Likabali–Bame road development.
UT of Ladakh: Construction of the high-altitude Key-La tunnel and widening of the Nurbo–Sumdo–Kiato road stretch.
Himachal Sector: Construction of the Khanadunti–Lamkhaga Pass–Harsil road to National Highway Double Lane (NHDL) specifications, providing strategic inter-sector connectivity between Himachal Pradesh and the Harsil sector.
Jammu & Kashmir: Four-laning of the Dhar–Udhampur road corridor.
Priority II Strategic Infrastructure:
Jammu & Kashmir: Upgradation of the Bandipur–Gurez–Razdhan–Dawar–Kabol Gali road network.
Arunachal Pradesh: Development of the Jang–Lumla–Nelya road section as part of an inter-connectivity corridor.
Himachal Pradesh Road Upgrades Get Tactical Green Light
Complementing the nationwide Strategic Projects list, the Ministry of Defence has also granted official approval for upgrading crucial high-altitude road corridors in Himachal Pradesh to NHDL specifications.
In a notification signed by Prekshit Prashant, Director (BR-I), defence clearance has been granted for key regional routes to streamline transit across challenging mountain terrains:
Chamba–Killar Greenfield Alignment: The Chamba-to-Killar section will be developed as a greenfield alignment designed to extend direct connectivity toward Leh, building upon existing and under-construction road networks across the region.
Wangtu–Mud–Attargu Corridor: Upgraded to NHDL specifications, this route establishes essential alternate axial connectivity within Himachal Pradesh, ensuring seamless troop deployment and heavy logistical movement toward high-altitude border posts.
Rajya Sabha MP from Himachal Pradesh Harsh Mahajan said he thanked PM Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and MORTH Nitin Gadkari for the road projects in the birder states that will boost connectivity and tourism and local economy.
High-Level Inter-Ministerial Coordination
The notifications have been formally communicated to the Secretary of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) at Transport Bhawan, New Delhi, ensuring direct funding and operational alignment between civilian agencies and defence bodies.
To guarantee synchronized execution, copies of the directives have been dispatched to top military and execution leaders, including the Directorate General of Military Operations (DGMO) and the Director General Border Roads (DGBR).
The initiative marks one of the most concerted strategic infrastructure efforts in recent years, systematically transforming movement along India's northern frontiers.
