Shimla: After days of disruption that left garbage piling up across markets and residential areas, sanitation workers have called off their strike, bringing relief to residents of the hill capital.

With the strike withdrawn, door-to-door waste collection will resume from Tuesday, with garbage collectors lifting waste directly from households as per the earlier system.

The strike had severely affected sanitation services across Shimla, with heaps of garbage accumulating near hotels, restaurants and even along the busy The Mall Road.

The situation had raised concerns about hygiene and public health in the tourist town.

Officials of the Shimla Municipal Corporation said that normal waste collection operations would now resume, and garbage collectors will start picking up waste from houses as usual.

Residents have been requested to cooperate with sanitation workers and ensure that garbage is handed over properly so that the city can quickly clear the backlog created during the strike.
