Flood Victims NDRF teams on ground zero in Rampur

SHIMLA: Barely after a year, the Monsson unleased a trail of destruction in a series of cloud bursts that have left over   50 people missing across  Samej in  Rampur, Manali-Kullu, and Mandi  districts in flash floods that struck its blow last night in wee hours.

Apart from the missing people, flash floods have caused massive  damage to the villages, roads, bridges, houses, power projects,  with Manali now cut off from the rest of the world due to multiple points of damage on the Kullu-Manali national highway  ahead of Kullu town.

More than 32 people still remains missing from Samej village  in the Samej khad flash flood in Rampur sub-division.

The Samej village has been reduced to a deluge-scarred khad where one hears the voices of wailing women and children with no hope of seeing their family members washed away in the flood that struck the village in midnight hours when most of them were sleeping.

Locals informed that the flood struck the village for the second time after 10 years. But no one advised villagers to shift the houses to higher safer location.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu addressed the media, highlighting the urgent response efforts and the critical situation on the ground. "Right now, according to the latest reports, 50 people are missing, and the bodies of two individuals have been recovered," CM Sukhu stated.

"The NDRF team, the SDRF team, and our Commissioners and SDMs are all on the spot.

The police department is actively involved as well. Our Revenue Minister has been in constant touch with me since about 7:00 am. We have just held a meeting with our officers and instructed them to make all necessary arrangements."

In response to the crisis, the Himachal Pradesh government has sought help from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army, and the Indian Air Force (IAF).

"We have requested assistance, and the state has suffered extensive damage. It is likely to rain more in the next 36 hours," CM Sukhu warned.

"I urge all residents of Himachal Pradesh to avoid river banks and crossings. Stay at our designated shelters for now. We have issued advisories to the Deputy Commissioners across the state and have asked the Air Force to be ready."

The Chief Minister reassured the public of the ongoing efforts to manage the disaster. "I have spoken to Home Minister Amit Shah, who has assured us of full support and has dispatched two more NDRF teams".

"Union Health minister JP Nadda, Central  government have been in touch, expressing their concern and willingness to help. We are facing significant damage to the state's roads, and Manali is currently isolated from the rest of the country," he explained.

In Rampur alone, 35 people are reported missing, with three bodies recovered so far.

There have also been reports of one person missing from another location.

"We are continuously receiving updates from the police and other authorities on the ground. While there has been no dam washout, the overflow and heavy rains have caused substantial damage," CM Sukhu added.

The Chief Minister emphasized the need for caution and cooperation during this challenging time.

"I request everyone to stay away from river drains and avoid traveling near affected areas".

"We are treating this as a war-like situation and have instructed all ministers and officials to take necessary measures. I am personally heading to the affected areas with our new minister Jagat Negi to assess the situation firsthand."

As the state braces for more rain, CM Sukhu called for immediate support from the central government.

"We need urgent relief funds and assistance to recover from this disaster. The Home Minister has assured us of the necessary resources and facilities," he concluded.

The situation remains critical, and authorities are working round the clock to manage the crisis and ensure the safety of the residents.

PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh has expressed deep shock over the missing people in the floods and promised all help to the victims families.
