Himachal Pradesh Pushes for liberal Financial Aid from 16th Finance Commission.. Centre Owes Rs 9042 Crore to Himachal..
SHIMLA: In a meeting here today Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu urged the 16th Finance Commission to provide generous financial assistance to Himachal Pradesh.
The state government, during a three-day visit from the Commission, outlined the state's financial needs and highlighted crucial issues affecting the region.
The Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of developing the border areas to boost national security and provide essential services to local residents.
He pointed out that Himachal Pradesh, prone to natural disasters, needs special consideration for post-disaster management.
Sukhu also mentioned that the state is awaiting a significant Rs. 9,042 crore from the central government for damages caused by last year’s heavy rains and flash floods.
Sukhu stressed that Himachal's contributions, such as maintaining the green cover of the Himalayas, have led to substantial revenue losses, which have not been compensated.
Despite a ban on tree felling, the state has sacrificed potential revenue to protect the environment.
Moreover, since 2017, the state has faced restrictions under the Forest Conservation Act (FCA), affecting its finances.
Highlighting Himachal's role in national development, Sukhu pointed out that the state has provided fertile land for projects like the Bhakra and Pong dams and supplies water and power to neighboring states.
Yet, it receives no financial assistance for these contributions.
The Chief Minister also mentioned efforts to boost the state’s economy, such as closing non-functional institutions and focusing on green energy, agriculture, animal husbandry, and horticulture.
Chairman of the Finance Commission, Dr. Arvind Panagariya, praised Himachal's achievements in education and health.
Various state ministers, including Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri and Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar, PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh also shared their insights during the meeting.
As the state looks to strengthen its rural economy and manage its tough geographical conditions, Sukhu called for the Finance Commission's support to help Himachal Pradesh continue its development efforts.
