SHIMLA/DHARAMSHALA: Civil society groups from Himachal Pradesh in Kangra and other paces have joined the nationwide chorus of condemnation, slamming the N Biren Singh’s Manipur Government’s apathy in the escalating violence against women and marginalized tribal communities in Manipur.
Staging series of protests in Kangra and other places on July 28 today, the Joint front of the women groups charged that the incident, however, is not an isolated one.
They cited a recent telephonic interview with India Today revealing that more than 100 similar cases of violence against women have been reported in Manipur, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and the government's role in protecting its citizens.
In a shocking incident captured on video, two tribal women in Manipur were brutally stripped naked and parades naked on the road. The horrifying footage, which went viral on social media, has sparked outrage across the nation, with citizens demanding immediate action and justice for the victims.
NCW should step in ensuring safety of women victims relief camps in Manipur, they demand.
The joint statements of the protesters issued today, they charged that despite the perpetrators' faces being clearly visible in the video, the initial response from the authorities has been far from satisfactory. A mere Zero First Information Report (FIR) was lodged, leaving many infuriated about the lack of swift action to bring the culprits to justice.
The origin of the violence in Manipur is complex, likely triggered by long-term conflicts and tensions surrounding the Manipur High Court's decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community. The ruling BJP government, led by Chief Minister Biren Singh, has faced accusations of favoritism towards the Meiteis over the Kuki community, further fueling the unrest, they charged.
Mainstream media has also come under scrutiny for failing to adequately highlight such incidents as they occurred, raising questions about the responsibility of the press in covering crucial issues that impact society.
As the video continues to circulate, citizens are demanding immediate resignation of the Manipur CM and a comprehensive investigation into all reported incidents of violence against women and marginalized tribal communities.
They demand swift and transparent legal proceedings, holding law enforcement officials accountable for their inaction.
