Shimla, December 10, 2024: Advancing the cause of human dignity and justice, Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, marked International Human Rights Day with a compelling special lecture themed “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now in Reference to Vulnerable People.”
Organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Disability Studies, the hybrid event brought fresh perspectives on protecting the rights of marginalized communities.
In her inaugural address, Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Vice-Chancellor, HPNLU, highlighted the urgent need for proactive measures to safeguard human dignity in a world riddled with complexities of identity and systemic inequities.
She emphasized preventive strategies as the cornerstone of robust human rights mechanisms.
The keynote address by Chief Guest Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chancellor of DNLU Jabalpur, struck a chord with his assertion that access to basic necessities like clothing is a fundamental right.
Tracing the legacy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and its Indian architects like Hansa Mehta, Prof. Sinha linked global principles to India’s constitutional guarantees under Articles 14, 20, and 21.
He called for collaborative efforts to address systematic violations and ensure timely interventions to protect vulnerable populations.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. (Dr.) S.S. Jaswal, Registrar, HPNLU, who applauded the organizers and participants for making the event impactful.
Dr. Sachin Sharma, Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Disability Studies, steered the program’s success, reaffirming HPNLU’s commitment to fostering awareness and action for human rights.
