PALAMPUR/SHIMLA- HP Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla said the Millets Mission being promoted under 'ShreeAnna' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is best bat for nutritional security not only in India but also in the world today. .
Presiding over the conference on "Millets for Nutritional Security" at CSK HP Agricultural University, Palampur here today, Governor highlighted India's leadership in promoting millets internationally.
He emphasized the role of CSK University in furthering this campaign.
India stands as the largest global producer of millets, accounting for 20 percent of worldwide production and 80 percent of Asia's production.
The United Nations General Assembly, on India's proposal, declared 2023 as the 'International Year of Millets.'
The Governor emphasized that millets, including Bajra, Chaulai, Jowar, Ragi, Kutki, Sanwak, Kangni, Chena, and Kodo, cultivated in 131 countries, are rich in nutrition and taste.
Promoting millets will contribute to combating malnutrition.
The Governor warned that iron and zinc deficiencies may become major issues for the Indian population by 2050, with 50 percent of the population, including 61 percent of pregnant women, currently experiencing iron deficiency. Millets can play a vital role in addressing this problem.
ShreeAnna, as per reports, can also contribute to ensuring food security in India and neighboring countries, according to the Governor.
Himachal Pradesh currently cultivates millets on an area of about 6.71 thousand hectares, with an annual production of 5.88 thousand tonnes.
The Governor commended the efforts of CSK Agricultural University in increasing millet production and raising awareness about its benefits.
During the conference, Professor H.K Chowdhary, Vice Chancellor of the university, honored the Governor.
He highlighted the university's achievements, ranking eighth among 74 agricultural universities in the country.
Professor Chowdhary emphasized the promotion of ShreeAnna, aligning with the vision of 'Vocal for Local' and announced the experimental cultivation of local food varieties in all Krishi Vigyan Kendras and research centers of the university.
Padamshree Nek Ram Sharma, the keynote speaker, expressed optimism that 'ShreeAnna' would become a staple food in the future, thanks to the efforts of the Government of India.
He shared detailed information about the qualities of millets and stressed the importance of understanding the diversity of forests, which are abundant sources of nutritious fruits.
The conference witnessed the presence of Dr. Pradeep Kumar, President of Krishi Vaigyanic Manch, along with Shri Nipun Jindal (Deputy Commissioner), Smt. Shalini Agnihotri (Superintendent of Police), professors, scientists, and other prominent individuals.
