Shimla, October 2, 2024 – Public Works and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh inaugurated the 73rd State-Level Wildlife Week at Potter Hill, emphasizing the need for a people's movement for wildlife conservation and cleanliness.
Themed "Human-Wildlife Coexistence," Singh urged citizens to actively participate in these initiatives, stressing that they should not be limited to events but become community-driven efforts.
Highlighting the increasing human encroachment on wildlife habitats, he called for harmony and protection for both wildlife and natural forests, which are essential for Himachal's wealth.
Singh also flagged off a cleanliness drive, urging people to maintain hygiene not only in human settlements but also in forests, to protect the habitats of wildlife.
He underlined the deep connection between cleanliness and conservation, noting that pollution poses serious threats to both the environment and wildlife.
Additionally, Potter Hill will be developed as an eco-tourism site, with a walking trail and mountain cycling routes.
This project, supported by the Asian Development Bank, has an estimated budget of ₹50 lakh, with completion targeted in two months.
During the event, Singh adopted the state bird, *Jujurana*, under the wildlife adoption program, pledging ₹13,000 annually for its care.
He encouraged others to adopt wildlife from local zoos to support conservation efforts.
Various activities, including a cycle rally, mini-marathon, and seminars on human-wildlife coexistence, are planned throughout Wildlife Week, which runs from October 2 to 8.
Singh also made a surprise inspection of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Hostel at Himachal Pradesh University, assuring students their demands would be addressed.
