HPPCL Chief Engineer’s Suicide Sparks Uproar, Employees Blame Management for what is being termef as ‘Culpable Homicide’..
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) is staring at a major storm after the alleged suicide of its Chief Engineer Vimal Negi, whose body was recovered from Bhakra Dam near Swarghat on March 18 after eight days.
Furious employees have now accused top management of toxic wrok environment and demanded an immediate change in the corporation's management.
They are staging protest in front of the HPPCL office shouting alongside against the top management.
In a strongly-worded memorandum to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the HPPCL employees' union termed Negi’s death as serious case of homicide and held the top management inclduing Managing Director H. Meena and Director Shivam Pratap Singh responsible for “creating a toxic working environment” that allegedly pushed Negi to end his life.
Negi went missing on March 10. His body was found floating in Bhakra Dam yesterday after being spotted by a fisherman.
Documents recovered from his clothes helped in identification. Police have detained one Director (Electrical), Deshraj, for questioning, while MD H. Meena and Director Shivam Pratap Singh reportedly went absconding soon after news of Negi’s body recovery flashed on social media.
The employees allege that ever since Meena took over as MD, the corporation has been riddled with controversies — from the Pekhbal Solar Power Plant mess to cost escalations in the Shangtong project.
"The working environment has become toxic. If the management is not shifted immediately, we’ll hit the streets, and the government will be responsible for the fallout," the union warned.
The CM is yet to respond but sources say a probe is on, and serious charges like abetment to suicide and culpable homicide could be framed against top HPPCL officials.
