Putting the spotlight on courage amid Republic Day celebrations, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Monday honoured Ritik Chauhan of Gagana village in Chopal tehsil with the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak for his exemplary bravery in saving lives, during the state-level 77th Republic Day  Function at the historic Ridge in Shimla.

He saved the life of two girls from the passing train. But in exemplary rescue effort, he lost his leg, setting example of courage and selfless service to humanity.

Ritik Chauhan, a resident of Gagana village under Chambi post office in Shimla district, was felicitated by the Governor in the presence of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Lady Governor Janaki Shukla.

The award recognises his selfless act and presence of mind that helped avert a tragedy.

Earlier, the Governor unfurled the Tricolour and took the salute at an impressive march past led by Additional Superintendent of Police Mehar Panwar and commanded by Lt. Shashwat Tiwari of 1 J&K Rifles.

Contingents from the Army, paramilitary forces, Himachal Police, Home Guards, NCC, NSS and other units participated, reflecting discipline and national pride.

Colourful tableaux showcasing developmental initiatives of various departments and vibrant cultural performances added to the celebrations, drawing large crowds from across the state.
