New Delh:  India and Japan came together for the third meeting of the India-Japan Sub Group/Joint Implementation Group (JIG), focusing on "Land Subsidence and Counter Measures".

Mr. Satish Kumar from India's Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) shared India’s findings on land subsidence from studies in Mohali-Chandigarh, Delhi-Gurugram (NCR), and Mehsana, Gujarat. “We’ve seen significant subsidence in these areas, and it’s crucial to understand and mitigate these impacts,” said Kumar, who is also a JIG member.

The Japanese delegation, in turn, presented their extensive experience with land subsidence in Tokyo. They discussed causes and countermeasures, highlighting Japan’s Ground Water Monitoring System, the Industrial Water Use Law of 1956, and the Building Water Use Law of 1962.

“Tokyo faced severe subsidence issues, but through strict regulations and monitoring, we've managed to control it effectively,” a Japanese representative explained.

They also shared insights from a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project in Jakarta, Indonesia, which successfully tackled similar subsidence problems.

"Our cooperation with Indonesia has shown that international collaboration can lead to effective solutions," the Japanese side noted.

This meeting underscored the importance of India-Japan cooperation in water resource management and showcased how sharing knowledge and strategies can help both nations combat land subsidence effectively.
