Big Boost for Apple Growers: Modi Govt Hikes MIP to ₹80/Kg, Bragta Calls It a ‘Bold and Historic Move’

Shimla, July 4:

In a major relief to apple growers across the country, especially in Himachal Pradesh, the Modi government has raised the Minimum Import Price (MIP) on imported apples from ₹50 per kg to ₹80 per kg.

The new rate came into effect after being approved by Union Agriculture Minister on June 3, 2025.

Addressing a press conference in Shimla, BJP spokesperson Chetan Singh Bragta hailed the move as a "bold and visionary" decision that reaffirms the Centre's commitment to the welfare of farmers and horticulturists.

“This step will not only curb the uncontrolled influx of foreign apples into Indian markets but will also ensure better prices for our local growers,” said Bragta.

“It’s a strong message that the Modi government stands firmly with our farmers.”

He recalled that in 2023, the Modi government had for the first time fixed an MIP of ₹50 per kg for apple imports — a move no previous government had attempted.

Bragta further added, “Since 2018, not a single kilo of apples has been imported from China. That’s the result of strong and clear policies aimed at promoting self-reliance and protecting domestic horticulture.”

Taking a dig at the Congress-led Himachal government, Bragta questioned its silence on growers’ concerns.

“While the Centre is taking concrete steps for farmers, what has the state government done so far? It's high time the apple growers of Himachal ask the government — what have you done for us?”

He concluded by saying that the Modi government's policies reflect its unwavering commitment to doubling farmers’ income and making India self-reliant. “This decision brings not just relief but also a new hope for apple growers across the country,” Bragta said.
