Though no incident of violence was reported from Oting, Mon town and Kohima today, but uneasy claim prevailed there as the politicians started converging on the village to express their condolences and solidarity with the bereaved families, revealed the reports.
Innocent victims who were killed in the botched operation on December 4-5 were in the age group of 21-33 years and they were returning home from the mines at the week end before they were ambushed three kms downhill from the village. Two twin brothers of a family were also among the victims of the Oting Killings that had attracted wide condemnation.
The Konyak Students Union in a media statement in Kohima has declared a weeklong mourning in honour of the Oting firing victims, expressed their dismay over the killings of innocent people, demanding ouster of the " killers from Konyak soil".
Chambers of Commerce industry Kohima has asked the state government to keep the stalls and bazars in the town open in the night hours for the convenience of the tourists, who have come to see the hornbill festival.
Nagaland tourism stated that they regretted to travellers and tourists in Nagaland saying, “During this time of sorrow we deeply regret the unforeseen inconveniences caused to you by this tragedy. We only hope that through this experience you will share in our grief and come to understand our story”.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma have demanded repeal of the Armed Forces Special Power Act from the Northeast. The democratic alliance government of Rio is being run with support of the BJP.
All India Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi tweeted as saying that the central government has failed to protect both the “civilians and the security men in the Northeast”.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor told media in Delhi that the government should have allowed discussion on the issue of Oting firing incident in the house.
Nagaland Congress president Kewek Khapetherie visited the family members of the Oting firing victims.
Center has deputed a team from the Home ministry to assess the situation in Nagaland after the Otiing firing incident that has brough bad name for the army.
