Shimla: In a crackdown on drug trafficking, Shimla Police on Thursday arrested an alleged ‘chitta’ (heroin) smuggler who had arrived from Haryana to supply narcotics in the state capital.
Acting on specific inputs, the police intercepted the accused and recovered a substantial 288 grams of chitta, being termed a major consignment.
The accused has been identified as Shamshad Ahmed, from Haryana. According to police officials, he had reportedly come to Shimla to distribute the consignment among a network of local peddlers, indicating a well-organised supply chain operating in the hill town.
Police have registered a case under the stringent provisions of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway to trace forward and backward linkages in the drug network.
Officials said efforts are being made to identify other members of the peddler chain and bust the larger nexus behind the supply.
The seizure is being seen as a significant success for Shimla Police in their ongoing drive against the rising menace of ‘chitta’ in Himachal Pradesh.
Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
