The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the attack on former Congress MLA Bambar Thakur has intensified its probe, making significant headway in identifying the assailants.
A key suspect, believed to have provided logistical support to the shooters, has been detained for questioning. Authorities are now piecing together crucial leads from CCTV footage and witness statements to establish the full sequence of events.
The attack, which took place on Holi, saw four armed men storm into Thakur’s residence and fire at least 12 rounds at close range.
Thakur sustained a bullet wound to his leg, while his personal security officer (PSO) and a supporter were also injured. While the former MLA continues to receive treatment at IGMC Shimla, his PSO remains in critical condition at AIIMS Bilaspur.
The SIT, led by a senior police officer, has conducted multiple raids in search of the assailants.
Security measures across Bilaspur have been heightened, and special roadblocks have been set up to prevent their escape.
The police suspect that the attack was carefully planned, possibly linked to Thakur’s strong stance against the drug trade in the region.
The former MLA has been vocal in his fight against the spread of 'chitta' (adulterated heroin), making him a target for organized crime.
Thakur’s family has alleged political involvement in the attack, with claims that the shooters may have had backing from influential figures.
The accusations have triggered a political storm, with the opposition demanding a fair and transparent investigation.
This is not the first time Thakur has been targeted. He was seriously injured in a similar attack last year, an incident that led to a violent chain of events involving his son.
Sources indicate that past rivalries and unresolved conflicts could also be linked to this fresh attack.
The SIT is now working on securing forensic evidence and tracking down potential hideouts of the attackers.
With mounting political pressure and public outcry, authorities have assured a swift resolution to the case.
