Himachal Police Honours Fallen Heroes on Police Commemoration Day

SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh Police on Wednesday observed Police Commemoration Day at the Police Ground in Bharari, paying solemn tribute to police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Director General of Police Ashok Tewari led the ceremony, joined by senior officers and personnel from various units across the state force. The observance featured a ceremonial parade, the traditional reading of the roll of honour, the laying of floral wreaths, and a two-minute silence observed in memory of the fallen officers.

Both the Governor and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu issued messages honouring the martyrs and expressing solidarity with their surviving kin.

Chief Minister Sukhu noted that the personnel’s supreme sacrifice serves as an enduring source of inspiration, reiterating his government’s commitment to building a responsive, professional, and people-centric police force. The Governor commended the dedication of officers operating under high-risk conditions to preserve public order and national integrity.

Addressing the gathering, DGP Tewari highlighted the personal dimension of the fallen officers' service, emphasizing institutional support for their kin.

“Behind every name we remember today is a life of courage, a family that has endured an irreparable loss, and a sacrifice that can never truly be repaid,” Tewari said. “These brave men and women did not merely wear the uniform; they lived by its highest ideals and, when duty demanded, gave their lives so that others could live in safety.”

Tewari added that ensuring the dignity, welfare, and day-to-day well-being of martyr families remains an enduring operational priority for the state police department.

Police Commemoration Day is observed nationwide annually on October 21. The date marks the anniversary of the 1959 Hot Springs ambush in Ladakh, where ten Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed defending the border against heavily armed Chinese troops. The day has since evolved to honour law enforcement personnel across all states and central forces who have fallen in the line of duty.
