SHIMLA/BHARMOUR: Raising the alarm over the grim situation in his constituency, Bharmour MLA Dr Janak Raj Thursday appealed to the Sukhu government to immediately provide helicopters so that MLAs from Chamba could reach their marooned people in Pangi and Bharmour.
Speaking to the media outside the House, Dr Janak Raj said, “Our entire district is cut off from the outside world. There is no road, no communication, and no reliable supply of food.
Thousands are stranded, but even the administration cannot confirm how many or in what condition they are. Relief operations are crawling.”
The BJP legislator stressed that MLAs should not be sitting in the Assembly when their people are in such grave distress.
“We were sent here by the people to stand with them in their darkest hour. If we cannot even reach them now, what purpose do we serve?
The Assembly session can wait, but the people in Pangi and Bharmour cannot. The government must make helicopters available so that we can be with our people,” he said.
Disturbing visuals from Bharmour and Pangi’s Mani Mahesh pilgrimage routes show trekking paths blocked with boulders, roads swept away along the Ravi river, and pilgrims—including women and children—struggling to move without any organised rescue effort in sight.
While reports suggest at least four pilgrims have died over the past ten days, thousands remain stranded in makeshift shelters. Connectivity to Bharmour, Salooni, Chamba, and Pangi has been completely snapped for the past three days.
Dr Janak Raj underlined that this was the time for elected representatives to be on the ground. “People need to see us with them, not debating in the Assembly,” he remarked.
